About News Tips

We are always interested in receiving information of interest to both the progressive community and the general public in the Jackson Metro Area. If you wish to give us a tip, please keep in mind the following:

1. Anonymous tips will be given the least credence. If you feel that you must remain anonymous, any tip that escapes the delete key must contain at least one reliable source: a person, a publication, or something else that indicates to us that the tip is worth following up on.

2. It is particularly important that we be able to ask you further questions, so if you must remain anonymous, get a free email account with Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, or another one of the hundreds of web sites offering free email. Our email address is editor@jacksonprogressive.com.

3. Keep in mind that, while The Jackson Progressive, as a matter of ethics and policy, will not divulge confidences made to us, email sent over the Internet is inherently insecure and may be intercepted at numerous places on the way to its destination. Your own ISP may be backing up all your email, for instance. Your email may be intercepted and read at any computer through which the message must pass.

You may also send us email encrypted by PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). Our public key is at ftp://ftp.jacksonprogressive.com/pgp/pgpkey.txt. You may download a free copy of PGP from http://www.pgp.com/products/freeware/default.asp for either Macintosh or Windows. PGP is a highly secure method of sending confidential messages.

4. Further, journalists are seldom covered by the legal privileges that protect communications to lawyers, physicians and clergy, and a subpoena is all that is necessary for a party to obtain a copy of your communications in our possession. We will honor any legitimate subpoena.

5. If it turns out that your tip is libellous or otherwise fraudulent and it causes harm, we will assist the injured party in finding and prosecuting you. We are dead serious about this. No funny business, OK?

6. If you feel more comfortable about it, you may mail communications to The Jackson Progressive, P. O. Box 2050, Jackson, MS 39225-2050.

7. Again, no phone calls, please.
